How I Read My Motorcycle's Spark Plugs ?
This past weekend, I installed new spark plugs in my Toyota truck. So while it's fresh in my mind I wanted to hide the fundamentals of the way to read a sparking plug, from the purpose of view of the weekend mechanic.
First, let's cover the essential functions of the sparking plug.
The sparking plug has two primary functions:
1. Ignite air/fuel mixture
2. Transfer heat from the combustion chamber
Now that you simply know what a sparking plug does, let us discuss the way to remove the plugs.
This may be sensitive, but please allow the engine and exhaust to chill down before performing this task.
1. With the engine cooled, disconnect the sparking plug wire caps where they hook up with the plug inside the plate. My advice is to very gently pull off the wire caps. On one set I yanked at the wire cap and stripped out the within. This was dumb, but it allowed me to shop for a pleasant set of red wires.
2. With the sparking plug wire caps removed, I suggest cleaning out the world around the plug. the simplest thanks to doing that are with compressed gas to blow out the debris and crud that has accumulated. Please leave the connection for this, the thought is that you simply want to get rid of the crud so it doesn't fall under the plate once you extract the plug.
3. Grab your sparking plug socket, I forget the right size for the Victory plug and take away the plug. It doesn't take much to loosen the plug since they're only tightened with 12 lb-ft (Foot Pounds) of torque.
4. now's the time to perform a basic inspection of the plug. A plug is the best indicator of how well your engine is performing.
First check for the following:
a. wiped out electrodes
b. check the insulators for cracks
c. and check the color of the insulator.
As mentioned, the sparking plug insulator color gives you a sign of how well your freedom engine is working.
INSULATOR COLOR
- a light-weight to light tan/gray color ... Condition is: GOOD. This light tan/gray color tells you that the sparking plug is working at an optimum temperature in which the engine is in fitness.
- If the insulator is white .. Condition is LEAN and the engine is running hot.
- When the insulator features a black sooty deposit or looks wet ... you've got an Over-RICH condition and possible Oil-control problems.
Installing the Spark Plugs
Whether you're replacing or installing a replacement sparking plug, always check the sparking plug cap with a niche or wire gage. The gap specification is: 0.8mm (0.032in).
I run the NGK CPR6EA-9 spark plugs in my 204 Kingpin. 2003 Vegas bikes use model: NGK CR7EB
If you're disciplined, you'll put anti-seize compound on the sparking plug threads. I never have, but it's suggested.
The torque specifications for the plugs are: 16Nm or 12 lb-ft (Foot Pounds)
